As I’m sure many of you are, I’m OBSESSED with speech therapy office supplies. I love back to school season because every store is filled with pretty new things. This is also the time of year where I get tons of questions on recommendations for office supplies. What printer would you recommend? Do you own your own laminator? Are the expensive sheets worth it? Where do you buy Velcro dots?
First of all, hopefully most of you have access to these things through work! We spend way too much money on our jobs as it is! I know there are schools out there with access to color printing, laminators, laptops for employees, and maybe even velcro dots! So ask your schools, ask your PTAs, ask your department first, before you run out and buy more speech therapy supplies!
Below is how I do things. I’ve purchased many brands for pretty much all of these and have settled on these staple items/favorite brands. Hope this is helpful to many of you.
—Pens—
I’m super picky when it comes to pens and love writing in color. After much research, I have two favorites. For a simple, but amazing black pen, I’d recommend the G2 pilot pens. For fun colorful pens, you need the Paper Mate Flair Felt Tip Pens. They are just so pretty. I love using them, especially to color code my planner or my to-do lists.
—Dry Erase Sleeves—
These dry erase sleeves make any worksheet reuseable – just slide a worksheet inside and use dry erase markers. I use them all the time. They are also useful for students who rip things without using up so many lamination sleeves! Save lots of time cutting and laminating and just have a few sleeves ready to go!
—Ziploc Bags—
I used sandwich sized and gallon sized Ziploc baggies frequently. I use the sandwich sized ones the most to keep flashcards and mini articulation cards together in student folders, as well as when I send them home for carryover.
—Laminator—
I personally own the older version of the Scotch Thermal Laminator at home.
I will also mention that at work, we recently purchased the Amazon Basics laminator which is cheaper and so far, seems to work well.
—Laminating Pouches—
I used to purchase the Scotch brand of pouches, and still use them for some projects (especially smaller cards or things prone to peeling)…
However, since I’ve discovered the Amazon Basics Laminating Sheets, I only buy those because they are SO cheap. I haven’t had any difficulty with them yet!
—Printer(s)—
I have two printers at home (because why not?). The one I use the most is my super old HP LaserJet 1200. It only prints black and white and I found it at a garage sale for $5 with 3 mega cartridges of ink. I still haven’t had to buy more ink in 3 years!
When I want to print color, I use my HP OfficeJet Pro 6835 which I’ve been super happy with. I like this printer because it prints clearly and quickly, and you can replace individual color cartridges when they run out instead of having to replace all of them when one color runs out!
Check it out on Amazon.
—Ink—
I use to purchase all of my printerink at Costco, or sometimes could find it on Amazon for a reasonable price.
I would byy a ton of ink at once and then keep them in Ziploc baggies by color so I always have some on hand.
But then! I discovered HP Instant Ink and never looked back. It’s basically a printer ink subscription and they send you more ink when you need it!
—Velcro Dots—
Don’t buy Velcro dots anywhere else! There are the best of the best and a good value.
They come in big rolls in a baggie. These are mine when they are about 3/4 gone. I keep this in my work bag all the time because I’m really a Velcro addict.
—Computer—
I started with an iMac desktop computer that holds all of my files and is perfect for opening multiple windows when creating products.
Thankfully, I was able to upgrade to a Macbook laptop!
—Paper Cutter—
Maybe not a necessary office supply to some, but I use this when assembling products every single time. Super small, portable, and saves so much time. I also love it for cutting construction paper to 8.5×11 size so I can print on it.
—iPad Case—
My favorite case for use with kiddos is the Gripcase. I love its handles.
The only flaw it that it makes the iPad pretty huge so its not great for when I want to travel with my iPad.
Again, these are simply the materials I use (and love). They fit my needs well 🙂 What speech therapy supplies and products do you use? Any similarities or differences? I’d love to hear your recommendations!
{thanks for reading}
Now that things have gone digital, you can read about some of my favorite online SLP tools as well!
Does the paper cutter work on laminated paper? If so, I’m so excited!!!!!
I’m not sure!! I will have to try it and get back to you!
That cutter is the best! It requires a bit more pressure, but it cuts through laminated paper well! I haven’t tried it on laminated cardstock, though…
Could you please indicate what brand of velcro dots those are, and where you purchase them? Maybe I am missing it, but can not find a link or anything.
There should be an Amazon link below my text and above my personal picture? If it’s not working for you, here is a link: http://www.amazon.com/Olymstore-1000pcs-Diameter-Velcro-Adhesive/dp/B00IYHAM72/ref=as_sl_pc_ss_til?tag=speecmusin-20&linkCode=w01&linkId=BTZODJFY26SIHRLP&creativeASIN=B00IYHAM72
Many thanks, Shannon!
I know this is an old post but just wondering which paper cutter you use? I just bought you Phonology Cycles pack and am in need of a paper cutter for home office use and prep!
Thanks!
I’d recommend both of these depending on which style you like best:

Hope that helps!
Awesome! Already ordered the second one on that list! Thanks!
