The Big Book of Exclamations is a book written by an SLP! I love this book, but it can be hard to find now. There is a sequel, The Big Book of Exclamations 2 that is great as well and a little easier to find! I love that it features more photo-realistic pictures with diverse families!
Read on for my original review of the book written in 2016:
I love using books in therapy! If my kiddos would let me, I could use books, books, books for everything. Unfortunately, books are a really difficult thing for some of my kiddos, especially my birth to 3 aged ones.
I heard about this book and knew I needed to get it! The Big Book of Exclamations is a book written by a speech-language pathologist.
From the moment you open the book, you know it’s different than your standard children’s book. There is an amazing explanation page filled with tips and tricks for reading and engaging with your child. There are prompts on every page filled with ideas of things to do while reading!
Below is an example of the artwork and the text. So creative! Instead of text you reading out loud, it describes what you should do with your hands, body, face, etc..! I love it! And I love the words chosen – typically CVC, CV, and VC productions so it’s easy for little ones to participate too!
Do you own this book? If you don’t, check it out on Amazon. My kiddos responded incredibly well to it and it was so nice to show parents. So many weren’t aware of how they should be reading books and this takes it step by step in order to increase engagement and excitement during reading time!
What are your favorite books to use with young kiddos or in birth to 3? I’m always looking for more book ideas!
{thanks for reading}

Yes! There is now a second edition which features diversity and digital illustrations – check it out. It is titled Talk with Me! The Big Book of Exclamations 2. Both books are reasonably priced on the Chatterbox Books website and much more expensive on amazon……Thanks so much for sharing!!

Do you think this book would be appropriate for 3-5 year olds? Thanks!
Shannon
I used it with several 3 year olds but haven’t used it much with kiddos older than that!

The book can be used with an older population to target various grammatical structures, functional vocabulary, and a variety of basic receptive and expressive language goals – it is great for language sampling too.
