Cycles for Phonology: Assessment, Setting Up, Progress Monitoring, & Intervention

If you’re a follower of Speechy Musings, you know that I recently switched to a school setting. I primarily work with students up to grade 2 and have a TON of students with phonology disorders.

I worked for 1 week at the school before heading out to Costa Rica. Rough life, I know. I was in the middle of one of the long drives from one of our hotels to another and discussing my new job. I kept thinking about how overwhelmed I was with phonology therapy. I had heard of cycles, but didn’t know where to start. I read things online but still felt overwhelmed. So, in true Shannon form, I pulled out my laptop and started this product. Really at first, I was just jotting down notes from research article after research article. Then, I made a progress monitoring form. When I start something, I like to be super organized so that I don’t lose steam and motivation! Shortly after I added a screener and an evaluation because I needed a fast way to assess all of these new students!!

3 months later, we have a complete Cycles for Phonology Toolkit. It has everything you need to informally assess children with phonological disorders, set up a cycles program for them, monitor their progress, and provide easy, grab and go therapy! Read on to learn more!

If you’re a video type of person, click here to check out a video tour of the product on YouTube or watch it below:

This cycles toolkit targets the following phonological processes and sounds:

Syllable Reduction (2, 3, and 4 syllables)
Syllable Structure (CV, VC, CVC, CVCV)
Fronting (initial /g/ and /k/)
Backing (initial /t/ and /d/)
Final Consonant Deletion (final /p/, /t/, /k/, /m/)
Stopping (initial /s/, /f/, /v/, /z/, and “sh”, final /s/ and /f/)
Cluster Reduction (initial /sm/, /sp/, /st/, /sk/, /sn/, and /sl/, final /ks/, /ps/, and /ts/)
Gliding (initial /l/ and /r/)

Included in this packet is:

Example phonology goals
Informal phonology screener
Informal phonology assessment
Progress monitoring forms
Session schedule
Parent letters
Summary pages for each process (of the targeted words on the flashcards)
Flashcards in both color and black & white for the processes named above
Watercolor card deck covers
Toolbox labels

Check out pictures below:

There are 5-15 stimulus cards for each sound. There are two card deck cover options:

 final_2 final_3

And the clip art used looks like the picture below:

All cards are included in both color and black & white:

Screen Shot 2016-02-16 at 5.17.54 PM Screen Shot 2016-02-16 at 5.18.23 PM

Below is an example of how I use the progress monitoring form to keep track of dates, progress, and processes!

And below is an example of the results form for the 80 picture informal assessment that is included:

For each process targeted in this packet, I’ve included an overview page with all the targets in each set included in the packet. Below is an example of the page for syllable structure.

When all assembled and put into this toolbox, the Cycles for Phonology Toolkit turns into this beautiful thing!

I purchased the toolbox from Amazon. Check it out using the link below. I’ve also heard they are for sale at local home stores such as Menards.

I have several clients who are perfect candidates for the cycles approach but I struggle with getting organized and sticking to a schedule to make sure I’m hitting all the necessary processes and incorporating all aspects of the cycles program. I was one of the very few Type B people in my graduate program and at my current workplace and am amazed by what therapists like you create. This product seems like the perfect tool to help me implement more evidence-based practice consistently.

Just started at a primary school and have tried to implement cycles but I am all over the place and constantly searching for materials. Love how this is laid out and right there at hand! Awesome!

What’s the best way to adhere the labels to the individual boxes on the toolkit itself?

Pages not numbered in the text. Very difficult to copy. I’m going to have to take it to Fed Ex to copy entire download. It looks organized and I’m looking forward to using it but not easy to copy
