Help your students better understand their problems and how to solve them! This packet will teach them how to figure out the level of their problem on a scale of 1-5, name examples of each, know how to react, and figure out how to solve each problem they face!

  • Description
  • Reviews (1659)

Do you have students on your caseload that have trouble determining how big or small their problems are? They might get very upset when they are told no or lose in a game? Or constantly over-react to small issues?

I do! So I created this packet that will help your students better understand their problems and how to solve them ! It will teach them how to figure out the level of their problem on a scale of 1-5, name examples of each, know how to react, and figure out how to solve each problem they face!

I love using the vocabulary “level” and relating solving problems to playing video games. Some levels might be trickier to complete than others, just like solving problems in real life!

This packet will get them thinking about questions such as, “Do I need an adult to solve this?”, “Will this problem last a long time?”, “Does this problem have an easy, obvious solution?”, and “How many people does this problem affect?”. It describes problems by 4 characteristics: people, time, solution, and danger. Purchase the packet to learn more!

This packet contains:

•Level of the Problem Introduction Book

•Visuals (tons!!)

•63 Problem Cards + 1 blank page for customization (with an extra page of “name any problem” cards if you use it in a game format)

•Level of the Problem Overview Visual (filled out)

•Level of the Problem Overview Visual (blank for customization)

•Level of the Problem Worksheets (2)

•Problem Solving Map Worksheet

•Level of the Problem Discussion Question Cards

•40 print and go, problem solving worksheets

Some fun ideas for using the cards are:

•Sort them onto the level of the problem visuals

•Play War! Divide the deck evenly between all players. Have each player flip over the top card. Whoever has the biggest (or smallest) problem wins all of the flipped over cards. Whoever has the most cards at the end of the game wins!

•Play memory. Put all the cards face down. Take turns flipping over two cards to try and find two problems that are the same size. Keep the cards when you find a size match!

I intended for this packet to be used with students that are cognitively able and ready to use a 5 point problem scale. Sometimes, with younger kiddos I keep it simple and focus on big (tricky) vs little (simple/easy). If you want to do this with your younger students too, that is definitely possible with this packet. Just get rid of the level of the problem number pages in the booklet and have them sort the cards into big/tricky vs little/easy categories instead of the 5 point visuals included.

One of the included worksheets provides a mathematical way to calculate the size of a problem which is helpful for your “concrete” students! It also helps with disagreements between students or you and your students.

☺One buyer said, “LOVE this product. I use it so much with great success. My principal asked me to present it to the faculty. Many were interested and I was able to refer them to your TpT store to get it!!”

We talk a lot about problem solving and the size of problems in my speech room. I have helped the students create problem scales in the past, placing hypothetical problems along a continuum. We sometimes come across a problem that is difficult to place on the scale. This product provides an objective way to classify problems along the problem scale. I am so excited for this product and our problem scales hand in hand, especially for my students who are more concrete learners. This is an excellent addition to my problem solving materials!! Thank you! 🙂

    Speech Is Heart – November 28, 2016

Thank you for giving examples of problems in various sizes. When I work on figuring out how big a problem is, it’s hard to think of problems. Students can usually come up with big problems and little problems but need help with the medium problems. I also love the people, time, danger, solution visual (I used the word fix for my younger students). It’s often difficult for my k-2’s to understand this concept, but the visuals help SO much. Thanks!

Great product! Perfect for use with my social group and home service clients. I like that the cards can be used in multiple ways, too. I’ve used them just for review, and I’ve used them to play war. Sometimes I play in reverse as well, so students who like to exaggerate and make every problem bigger than it needs to be, I have them try to convince me that their problem is smaller.

This is so great. I’ve been teaching my students from it this week, and I’ve already heard, “This is probably a Level 1 problem.” As I was assembling the “war” game cards, I thought I really needed to say this. If you think, “No one can possibly know all those little things that my students turn into HUGE deals,” you’re wrong. Talk about nailing it! It’s like you’re in the mind of my students!

Although I haven’t used this product yet, as I am getting it ready, it appears to provide some great training strategies to assist students with ways to decide the “size of a problem” to help determine which issues to let go of and which issued to address immediately, as well as, how to think through them. The visuals are awesome and who doesn’t want to be a detective and solve a problem! I have many students that think they need to respond to every issue/problem that they encounter, leaving them in a “defensive mode” more often than not. I am excited to use this product with my students! Thank you for all your hard work in putting this product together!

I am so happy with this product! I started to work on identifying the size of a problem with some of my students with Autism this morning. They were having a hard time recognizing that some problems are small and my explanations didn’t seem to be helping. I found this packet by searching at lunch and I already have plans to implement it on Thursday. It breaks down the skills I was trying to teach in a really systematic way to help take some of the argument out of identifying problems. It’s so much more thorough than anything I would’ve come up with! I also have plans to talk to classroom teachers about it for carryover to the classroom. I think it could be really helpful for the general education setting!

This product makes an abstract concept VERY concrete. Some of my older friends (4th grade) had the rubric memorized about half way through the school year. This is a great comprehensive resource for introducing “size of the problem.” I had a particular student in mind when I purchased this resource and he really responded to putting a “level” to his problem. This student often has big reactions to level 1 problems. I’m hoping that by making this concept more concrete he will learn to respond to problems in appropriate ways. Thank you!

This has been a magical resource for helping students develop an understanding of the scale of a problem and learn to scale their feelings in response. I’ve used it with students from 7yrs to 12 years; they particularly liked the checklist and scoring tool. The language was helpful, especially for catastrophising students. Now with the update of scenarios…. very very important and useful tool in my repertoire.

Breaking the problem down in this way gave us more descriptors than what has been previously used (big/medium/small problem) AND helped to fully explain how to figure out what level the problem was.
