Teach conversation skills in a structured way with this fun game that teaches asking questions, making comments, taking turns, and having a conversation about a variety of topics!

Your kids will love this simple card game that imitates natural conversation while providing a visual and something tangible to help visualize the flow of conversation! Great for social groups or anybody working on social language skills.

Here’s what’s inside:

  • 2 pages of ‘direction cards’ (i.e.: ask a question, make a comment, make 2 comments, make a comment then ask a question)
  • 63 conversation topic cards
  • 9 blank conversation topic cards for customization

All covering the following targets:

  • Initiating a conversation by asking a question
  • Continuing a conversation by answering a question
  • Continuing a conversation by elaborating on an answer
  • Asking a reciprocal, or follow-up question

Here’s how I play:

  • Make two piles of cards: one for direction cards, one for conversation topic cards.
  • Have the dealer shuffle 6 direction cards to each player and flip over one conversation topic card.
  • The dealer goes first. He or she should lay down one of their direction cards. See key below for examples: Comment: I love summer! Question: What season do you like? Two Comments: I love summer. I always go to the beach. Comment + Question: I love going to the beach. Have you ever gone to the beach?
  • Play/conversation continues in a clockwise fashion. The next player should lay down a direction card and respond to the first player appropriately.
  • If a player gets stuck or responds inappropriately, they have to draw another direction card from the pile and their turn is over.
  • The first person to get rid of their hand wins, or just play for fun!

Here’s some reasons why other SLPs have loved this resource:

This might be my new favorite game! It has always been a struggle to get my social skills kiddos to ask questions as well as comment. This gives them a visual reminder and makes them plan out what they want to say in advance so they can use the card. One of my ASD kids had his best thought out, on-topic conversations today thanks to this game! Plus, they had a blast playing! Definitely an instant fave!

I used this last week during social skills. The kids loved the topics. While it can be difficult to have such a structured conversation (other kids want to share, add, make comments out of turn), it is important to break down the skill. I thought the instructions could use a bit more clarity (does the dealer put down cards when they’re responding to kids questions or comments? but I’m sure I’ll adapt as I go. Thank you!

I love how this game gives them topic ideas and also prompts them to occasionally ask a question too. So many times I hear kids, especially my students who qualify for social behavior (I’m a resource room teacher) respond to someone telling them something by adding their own comment, on topic but doesn’t acknowledge that they heard their peer or paid any attention to their comment. This also works since this group works with a coworker but I have to provide the work for them so it’s little to no prep on my part and I don’t have to come up with topics!

I needed this for a very specific group and have ended up using it for so many of my groups. It’s a wonderful resource to target social and pragmatic skills, but we’ve also been using it to work on carryover of speech sounds or to practice language skills during those last few minutes of speech after our activity. On a completely technical note – I also love the way you have the cards laid out right next to each other with just that smidge of space between them. It makes laminating and cutting them so much more bearable!

I’m crazy about this resource! It’s such a smart way to target conversation skills, and I love how you can line up the question/comment cards to provide a visual representation of how long a conversation can be. It’s also great for those students who tend to speak for too long or for too much about themselves because the style of the game really requires them to share the conversation. I wanted to try the game with my students before printing in color and laminating, but this one is for sure getting the full color, extra durable treatment to use again and again.

This resource is nice because it provides us with topics and visual cues that assist the non/low readers. I like the blue question/comment cards as well. I used sticky notes prior to buying this and this is more engaging and organized. My students enjoyed selecting cards from the decks. I added an eye contact and questions words on the board for the children to refer to, as some children overuse “what….?” or “when…..?” The extra visual supports helped them engage more appropriately so they are reminded to face the group when others are talking or the child is speaking as they tend to look at me (the SLP) and I stand there and point to the group. Overall it is beneficial to have this to speed up the conversational shifting. Thank you.

My junior high social group used this game to practice basic conversation skills with a focus on topic maintenance and asking questions to maintain a conversation. It took a few games for the students to really get the hang of it but the concrete visual supports really helped students. I also really liked that difficulty level could be modified depending on the student’s needs: making one comment, asking one question, making 2 comments/questions, asking a question then making a comment during the same turn. Great resource!

While I appreciate the structure of this resource in teaching conversational skills, I found the actual conversation produced during the game to lack flow. Students often got stuck on giving the response indicated on their direction card without attending to the broader social cues (e.g., asking a question when a comment would have been more appropriate before asking a question). The additional support needed to respond appropriately only interrupted flow further. The topic cards are great and I will continue to use those in my sessions but there is room for improvement with the game concept :).
