This resource contains visuals of story elements (e.g., character, place, time, plan, action, success, etc…) and story structures (different story paths/plot lines of story elements).
You can use these visuals and images alongside any story or picture book!
This resource includes five main parts:
1 – Story Element Cards (24 cards)
2 – Story Element Images (each element is saved as a separate color image so you can use them on your own worksheets, activities, books, etc…)
3 – The Periodic Table of Story Elements Visual/Poster
4 – Story Path/Structure Visuals (4 different structures)
5 – Story Structure Writing Worksheets/Graphic Organizers (4)
In addition, I’ve included a summary of some key story grammar research, a few sheets to make data collection easier, a poster, and a coloring page.
The included story elements are: character, place, time, problem, surprise, liftoff, goal, plan, action, oops, feeling, thought, dialogue, journey, success, solution, landing, wrap-up, backstory, beginning, middle, and end.
The story structures that I include visuals of are: a simple problem/solution story, a traditional story grammar plot, a “try, try again” story, and a “follow the plan” story. But, with the included images, you can make a story element path for any story or picture book you read!
The entire resource is 38 pages in total.
Note: You may not resell or reshare any materials you make using these story elements! They are for your own personal use with your own caseload ONLY.
These story element and story structure visuals are the same ones I included in my story units, like Searching for Home. If you love this resource, I know you’ll love those too!

I love this new approach for teaching story grammar elements! The icons that represent the narrative components are attractive and meaningful. I plan to print a large version of the Story Path to hang as a poster for functional decor in my Speech Room. I love the goal suggestions and research evidence which are going to help me head into IEP meetings with confidence!

My students are really enjoying these cards! I like the way that they are set up from beginning, to middle, to end. It’s definitely helping my students identify parts of stories we’re reading more easily. I like that it pulls in some more complex story structures too.

I got this resource because I had previously purchased “Searching for Home” and “Cloudy” and figured this would be a good companion to those story units as well as other stories. The visual supports are stellar…I love the Story Path Visuals and the Story Element Cards as well as goal suggestions…overall another fabulous resource from Speech Musings!

I have chucked out everything I had for any story structure assistance and am now only using your visuals and ideas. The pictures are offered in colored or black and white, and in different sizes. The children immediately understood the concept better and their feedback was extremely positive. They understood the keywords provided in this resource and were able to make far better choices when having to give the main ideas in each phase of the story. This in turn gave them a much-needed confidence boost and they performed above expectations in their class- and assessment tasks. What a beautifully clear and concise way to help a student learn! Thank you so much for the excellent resources you produce.
