Use these worksheets for your middle school students to teach a wide variety of vocabulary skills and, most importantly, strategies that work on increasing vocabulary AND word finding skills.

Vocabulary development is one of the most frequently targeted language goals on upper elementary and middle school caseloads, and this no-prep resource gives you a structured, research-aligned way to address it session after session.

These 100 print-and-go worksheets systematically teach a wide range of vocabulary strategies, including morphological analysis, context clue use, parts of speech identification, synonyms and antonyms, and multiple meaning words, all built around age-appropriate, academically relevant target words. Students hear, say, read, and write the target word; identify syllable count and part of speech; analyze prefixes, suffixes, and root words through morphological tasks; use context clues to interpret meaning in sentences; generate definitions in their own words; identify synonyms and antonyms; and apply the word in functional, real-life scenarios. This approach aligns with what the research tells us about effective vocabulary intervention, including the importance of explicit instruction, multiple exposures, and teaching strategies that transfer to unfamiliar words students encounter in their academic curriculum. Organized across 3 difficulty levels, including subject-specific sets for English, math, science, and social studies, this resource is particularly well-suited for older students with language goals tied directly to classroom content.

A 3-level structure allows you to differentiate within the same session for students at varying ability levels, and each worksheet takes approximately 10 to 30 minutes depending on the depth of discussion, making it easy to fit within your existing session format. Because the included editable PowerPoint lets you swap in vocabulary from your students’ specific school curriculum, you can also use this resource to bridge therapy goals directly to what is happening in the classroom.

I have students get their folders out immediately and do the first page of familiarizing activities for a new vocab word on their own.     As always, this is an extremely high quality product from Speechy Musings. I had language groups that contained multiple grade levels last year, and these were great for targeting vocabulary that benefited all of them, since it was more difficult to target vocab from the classroom (because they were all in different classes). I love how many exposures to a new word this gives students in a short amount of time. I appreciate how they aren’t repetitive. Some features are the same on each sheet, but a few are always switched up to keep kids interested.

    I work with middle schoolers and haven’t gotten as much use out of this product as I had hoped. I think it would be stronger if the sets were split and offered as an optional bundle. Set 2 was a great level of challenge for my students, however set 1 was too easy and set 3 was very content-specific, so we haven’t used it. (For content-specific words I go directly to my teachers to target what’s happening at the moment in the classroom). But, I appreciate the editable pages–and will use them as I find time. I also like these as a guide for showing teachers an example of how to efficiently target vocabulary.

It really cements the vocabulary word’s meaning, and my students’ ability to use the word appropriately. Some see a worksheet and decide it’s boring, but for the students who will sit and do the work without a game these worksheets are great. I like that level three is subject specific, so with older students I can focus the words we work on to include subjects they are having a harder time with academically.
