This incredible FREE resource containsĀ speech sound cue cardsĀ for 23 consonant sounds and 14 vowel sounds!
The full, updated file includes:ā
- Speech sound cue card visualsā
- Vowel sound visualsā
- Vocalic R variation visualsā
- Manner + voicing visualsā
- And a few alternate card versions for maximum flexibility! ā
On theĀ frontĀ of each card is the phoneme, a mouth visual, and a visual that represents the sound.
On theĀ backĀ of each card is a voicing icon, the written graphemes for the sound, place/manner/voicing prompts, and a real picture of a mouth.
I like to print them back-to-back and use the side that works best for each student. The back (with the real picture and written graphemes) often works better for older children.
These cards can be used to directly teach and scaffold success with speech sound production as well as to increase awareness of individual sounds that make up a word.
I’ve also included a table with all of the sounds and their child friendly names that correspond with the pictures on each card!
I keep these cards on a ring and use them daily in my speech sound therapy! I know you will too.

Thanks for including the vowels!
Ruthanne D. –
These are nice visual reminders (if I have to say, “remember, it’s a lip-biter sound” one more time I will cry!). My patients were a little confused by the picture at first because they are not all words that start with the letter, but rather kinesthetic cues that connect to the sound in another way. I like the variety, but had to glue the “child-friendly name” sections onto the back of each card so I could remember!
Creating Communicators –
I think these are wonderful!!! Great pictures and cues! I am going to be using these A LOT!
Thanks!!

Let’s Talk Speech Therapy –
Perfect for speech room AND home use. Thank you!!
Mary C. –
Thanks! Great cards
Laura V. –
These are great cards for both phonemic awareness/production and I’ve also used them in a reading camp as a take home for phonics for those students really struggling with basics. Only one sound I’m not crazy about the reference: “f” as the “angry cat sound.” My opinion is the ‘f’ sound is more like wind or a leaking balloon or tire…I would imitate a cat’s hiss with air over a high tongue at the soft palate (like a ‘k’ with the connection). IMO. Otherwise, GREAT!
Aileen Miracle –
These could actually work really well with my choir. Thank you!

Carol C. –
I love using visuals for my clients working on articulation/phonology and something also to leave with parents. The only sound that I have used a different cue for is the /K/ sound – I have called it the “coughing sound” and it seems to work with clients who need the back of the tongue placement also. I LOVE the idea of using this on a ring – I wish there were a “cover sheet” for that – I am making my own. I also am so happy you included a print-out that explains each sound. That is wonderful! Thank you so much for this resource!!!

Turning these into a pocket size material on a ring. My first graders have been receptive to the images. I’m planning to try them with my younger students as well.
Rachel Z. –
These have been an amazing resource for my preschoolers. The visual cue is sometimes all they need to correct their errors. I love it!! The mouth picture for ājā is not correct (which I easily fixed with the āchā picture). It has been tough for my concrete/ASD kiddos to get over the fact that the pictures often donāt directly correlate with phoneme.
Sally G. –

Audrey S. –
I love the LiPs program but I’ve always wanted to have colorful mouth photos with all of the letters (including vowels) next to the mouth, along with the “child friendly name” for the sounds. Thank you!! The only suggestion I have is to add the “child friendly name”/description to the cards (ex “mmmm like eating something yummy” to the bottom of the cards). However, I’m not complaining at all–it’s a great price. Free! You’re amazingly helpful.
Janna Wright –
I LOVE these! Thank you!
Hailey R. –
This is amazing this is free! I just bought sound cue cards for $60+ dollars and am so bummed I didn’t see these first because I honestly like these better. Thanks so much for your hard work in helping more SLPs with free-less expensive amazing products!
Alice W. –
I love this resource, thanks for making it free!
This is more of an idea than a criticism, but it would be so cool if all the sounds (especially the vowels) had the IPA symbols in addition to the English orthography ā I notice you already did it for the short a! I’ll probably write in the IPA on my own set of cards, so that my linguist brain doesn’t get confused when I’m trying to use these with my students.
Donna C. –
I can’t believe your generosity in making this a free resource! It’s amazing, and I love that you’ve incorporated the mouth shapes (and the movement sequences for diphthongs!!) This is soooo much more effective than the highly-priced cue cards that I unfortunately purchased before finding your wonderful resource. The fact that it is free is incredibly generous of you!! Awesome freebie! These will be very helpful for therapy!
Carolyn R. –
Thank you so much for this resource! I am a first grade teacher and I have been looking for resources to help my students produce and distinguish between the vowel sounds. I only recently learned how essential phonemic awareness is for early literacy development (I seriously had no idea that the words we read are stored in our PHONOLOGICAL memory not visual!) and started training my students in phonemic awareness right away. I had great results with most of my class, but I discovered that my struggling readers were really unable to hear the difference between even the short vowel sounds and were unable to reliably produce the sounds. How could I possibly expect them to map the sounds to memory when they couldnāt hear the difference?! I am so excited to use these cue cards as part of my whole class instruction this year. I am also going to post them on a āsound wallā bulletin board display that will also show the different spelling patterns that can represent the sounds as I teach them. Thank you so much for sharing this resource for free! I know my students will benefit!
Karen V. –

Carrie H. –
This is a very thorough resource! I am not a speech therapist, but I am waiting for my phonics curriculum materials to arrive, and this is going to help bunches! I considered printing only the 3 mouth shapes I need, but I printed all of them because I bet I will be using these more than the ones that come with my materials. Thank you so much!
Ashley M. –

These are really good. I use the Bjorem speech cues in therapy but I needed something to use outside my room to have students sit while waiting on my current speech group to leave. I wanted something that was speech related. These were perfect! I used the vowels and students know that when they come to speech they are to sit under the “mouths” and wait. Other teachers have commented on how much they love them. I am happy to share where I got it and that it’s FREE. Thanks!
Margaret M. –
This is SO helpful especially because in my district we are all masked and most likely will be for the foreseeable future. This is going on 2 years of masking, and when I was virtual from home last year I would use these on my shared screen to help students know how to produce sounds. This year, I am back in person and I use these with students by holding them next to my mouth and also to show the different vowel sounds for students who have trouble differentiating vowel sounds and production. Such a great resource. I use it all day, every day.

I’m often amused when I remember these were free, because they are hands down my absolute favorite resource that I own. I have a few laminated sets now and keep them in two small portfolio folders (one for vowels, one for consonants) organized by position for easy storage/access. I use them in some capacity pretty much all day every day. They’ve been an amazing tool for cueing, as well as for supporting phonemic awareness. “Sounding out” target words with these cards is a regular component of my sessions now, and one that really seems to engage many kids and deepen their processing. Very grateful for the existence of these cards and for the ways they’ve strengthened my practice as a school-based SLP.
