Need a way to progress monitor or collect data on your students receptive ability to answer simple, functional WH questions in your speech therapy sessions? Would you love that tool to use REAL pictures? Look no further!

For each WH question type (who, what, where, when, why), I’ve included:

  • A simple visual/poster
  • A more complex visual poster (I print them back to back)
  • Progress monitoring form/data collection sheet
  • 20 WH Question Picture Cards
  • A matching card deck cover for easy grab and go therapy

There are also 10 generalization pages included which contain a single picture and 5 related WH questions.

This resource also includes Boom Cards™️ that are identical to the printable flashcards! I hope this additional format is helpful for you!

On each WH question picture card there is a picture symbol (that matches the poster and generalization pages), the question, and 2 real picture answer choices.

    Hi! I just downloaded this resource as a way to track progress for my preschoolers who are nearly non-verbal. I find it very difficult to work on WH questions with this population and loved the idea of real pictures! I find all the pics and questions pretty useful. Just an idea…for the WHO section…WHO related to occupations are very difficult for language impaired preschoolers, and the other 10 questions are mostly “what doing” questions (i.e. who is running). Would like to see something like, with “who is eating” there would be a picture of a person eating, and a picture of food. I think this would help us to discern if the student actually knows that “WHO” means a person, rather than them just understanding that the one photo is of “eating”. I hope that makes sense.

    I LOVE this resource for working on instruction of how to respond to wh- questions, mainly Who, What, and Where. I think the When questions could have been subgrouped based on level of difficulty (e.g. time of day vs. season choices vs actions etc.) as kids on the spectrum, from my experience, often benefit from this type of discreet instruction. I would also just use a single predictable picture for these choices. (e.g. when do you use a flashlight? provide consistent picture or symbol of daytime and night time rather than someone swimming and someone shining a flashlight as options). Other than that though I absolutely love the resource, and use it all the time. Also love the carryover aspect of it with the multi-level questions at the end.

    A few suggestions to consider:
    (1) Including 3-4 multiple choice options for the answer instead of a binary choice for greater complexity and to ensure that the child’s choice isn’t just based on chance
    (2) Including a greater variety of “what” questions that focus on “verb” answers (e.g. what is the boy doing?). The current set seem to be more “object”-heavy.

    Having said that, as a generalist speech therapist, I particularly like the real pictures as I am also able to use them for my adult clients! Thanks!

It comes in print and digital. incudes separate teaching and practice sections, the picture responses format makes answering easier for younger students, and tons of practice pages. The generalization section can be used many ways… I like to offer my student an answer and ask them to tell me which question I was answering. Great purchase!

    I love how quick and easy these are to prep and use with my caseload. I find that my patients have an easier time comprehending and demonstrating the skills with resources like this: that use real-world colored photographs in visual fields that are congruent, same size, shape etc. I also appreciate that Speechy Musings randomizes what side of the card the ‘correct’ response is on, helping with those patients who learn pattern recognition FAST with resources that target wh- goals.
