This digital (Boom Cards™️) resource targets simple describing and defining (nouns/objects) using attributes and categories for language therapy.

This digital (Boom Cards™️) resource targets simple describing and defining (nouns/objects) using attributes and categories for language therapy.

On each slide are icon-based answer choices. Your student should drag and drop the correct one into the sentence to describe or define the object.

It includes two levels as follows:

Level 1 – Describing Using 2-3 Attributes

This level targets describing with attributes/adjectives including empty, round, heavy, broken, tall, bright, wet, and old.

In the first section of level one, you will practice describing real pictures with two different attributes. For example, you might describe the toy as “round and colorful”. In the second section, the difficulty increases and you will describe the pictures using three different attributes. For example, you might describe a box as “empty, brown, and open”.

Level 2 – Defining Using Category + 1-2 Attributes

This level targets simple defining building off the skill of describing. A consistent sentence structure is used (“A _____ is a ______ that _______.”) so your students gain confidence with how to produce a simple definition.

In the first section of level two, you will create definitions with the category (group) plus one attribute including function, location, color, action, parts, or shape. In the second section, the difficulty increases as you will create definitions with the category plus two attributes.

Last, I included an informal assessment/more advanced option (15 slides) which you can also use for carryover of these targeted skills. It works great for seeing how your students do with a lot less supports as they contain no icons, no answer choices, and no visuals.

The resource starts using real pictures and ends using simple icons so it is appropriate for a wide variety of ages and language levels.

There are 97 slides (in a Boom Card™️ format only) included in total.

    My students have been working on describing for a while and can typically tell me a few attributes with prompting (I ask them all the EET questions one at a time), but they struggle to define and describe vocabulary words in sentences. This resource is excellent for helping them feel more successful in an engaging way. I only wish there were more foil options for them to sort through.

    This resource is great for students who need moderate to maximum support for describing. It is carefully sequenced so the SLP can scaffold this skill easily. I think the EET type of describing strategy is a good approach, but by choosing to describe using a few types of attributes at a time, (eg: category and function,) the child can begin to learning to describe by identifying a few salient features instead of being overwhelmed with a long list of attributes.
