Purchase my other WH questions binder and love it, but want to use different pictures and even a different WH question form? Look no further!
So many kids I work with have trouble answering WH questions. I might ask, “Where do you sleep?” and they will say “Blue”. Or I might ask, “Who delivers your mail?” and they will answer “Mailbox”. These types of students often have trouble matching the WH word to their respective answers.
This interactive book will help teach your students how to answer WH questions. You students will learn that “who” means a person, “where” means a place, and “what doing” means an action. They will be practicing this skill with simple pictures, practicing everything in the here and now instead of answering hypothetical questions!
Prep this book once and use it forever!
How does this book work?
Each page has a scene with a person (either a girl or boy) doing an action. For example, page 1 has a boy sleeping on a bench. Below each picture is a sentence strip with three interactive, Velcro ready boxes. For example, “(who) is (doing what) on (where). Your students will find the correct “who” icon card and stick it to the “who” space (e.g. the boy) and continue with what doing and where. Then, the sentence strip will describe the picture (e.g. A boy is sleeping on a bench.)
Included is:
- 24 scene pages
- 8 backgrounds and 8 people doing various actions that rotate throughout
- 24 icons for each place, person (4 “the boy” cards and 4 “the girl” cards), and actions
- additional page to identify what season it is in the picture and point to icons describing how you know
- icon storage page
- leveled directions
- introduction pages (for teaching) including sorting and directions for the students
- who, what, when, what doing, where, why, and how icons
- 4 bonus pages with smaller pictures and the “who”, “what doing”, or “where” icons randomized to make sure your students understand!
Check out a short video preview of this product here!!
You will need a binder, lamination, and Velcro to assemble. Or, use a binding machine.

Thanks for sharing!!!
Blair Hoffman –
What a fantastic activity. The graphics are colorful and inviting! There are many levels of support. I could see adding the icons for 2 of 3 parts of the sentence and working on one question form at a time and then moving on to discriminating between question types. This activity is laid out well to work on basic sentence structure with great visual support. I can also use this to work on pronouns (he/she) with my students. All around a great resource!
Jessica Solari –

Speech in Secondary –
cute! only thought is that I also teach my students that answering “what” often means a “thing”, like “what does you use to stay dry in the rain?”; maybe would be helpful to have both types of “what” questions

Lynice Firey –
I just used this book for the first time with a kiddo with some cognitive delays. On the first page, she was answering who questions with answers like “question,” but after two pages with models and choice options, she was getting most of them! This is a great visual for kiddo’s with cognitive delays, or that are on the spectrum. I’m going to print off he/she cards for extras to work on pronouns with this book as well. Some pictures are slightly difficult to tall apart (running vs playing) or what the person is doing (dancing), but all in all, this is an excellent resource. We even used clean up to continue working on skills by categorizing the who, what-doing, and where pictures into groups. I may print off three copies of the icons so we don’t have to take them off as we work through the book.
Ashley O –

Very simple and to the point! Love the lesson ideas included and the visuals provide the student to really look and observe what they are seeing because some images are unusual such as a person dancing on a mountain or sitting at a desk on an ice rink. I am a student SLP. I found this particularly useful for me to practice SVO sentences with my clients! It is similar to colourful semantics but more challenging, like a step up which suits for children with the basic concept of pronoun, verb, and objects. Love how it includes the idea of season and places!
Stacey C. –
The kiddos loved taking the pictures and putting them in the sentence. Then helping me “read” what they made.
Emilie R. –
I loved using this resource during my in-person sessions. I wish there was a digital copy. I’d download it in an instant! 🙂
Danielle N. –
This resource is helpful to teach students different parts of a sentence nouns/verbs as focuses on present progressive “ing” verbs. I love to use this in small groups and each student is in charge of one of the parts (who, what, is doing). Then the student’s practice “reading” the sentence below. This resource is great for scaffolding from receptive to receptive language.
Speech-Language and Learning –
