This product is perfect for early communicators learning to expand their utterances (MLU) and use a variety of grammatical structures. Early communicators need to learn to talk about objects by naming them, describing their color/characteristics, indicating their location, who owns them, and who is doing things to them. These matrices provide the perfect activity to practice those critical skills!
Included is 25 pages of content which means you’ll receive 50 (yes, fifty!!) matrices that are incredibly easy to prep and use.
The matrices target the following syntactic structures:
- Color + Object
- Agent + Action
- Adjective + Object
- Action + Object
The symbols on each matrix start with a 1:1 correspondence such as colors (only one color matches to each image) but end with the symbols combining in a variety of ways. For example, given the words “tall, old, pretty” and “ladder, queen, butterfly” you might model, “Tall ladder”, “Tall queen”, “Pretty queen”, “Old queen”, and “Pretty butterfly.”
There are so many ways to use this product such as in dry erase pockets, writing in the boxes with pen/pencil, or using the included yes/no symbols. I laminate mine, store them on a binder ring, and pair them frequently with the included yes/no symbols and/or dry erase markers. There are many ways to mix and match the words on most of the cards so really have fun with it!

I’m loving these sentence matrices for my preschoolers through 1st graders! I’ve used them with groups of up to four students (gulp) and somehow they all stay engaged. I laminated them, gave each student one matrix, and had them take turns making a sentence from their matrix and marking which words they had used. We also used them to formulate questions (e.g., “Is a frog pink?”) and decide whether the sentence made sense. They love yelling, “Noooo, that’s silly!” when we come up with a combo that doesn’t sound right or isn’t logical.
