Understanding complex sentences is critical for understanding everything from picture books to oral communication to classroom texts. This resource includes digital activities, a digital assessment file, and a printable version of the activities.
Most of the complex sentences include adverb clauses and relative clauses because these sentence features are uniquely difficult for students with language disorders.
To increase comprehension of these sentence types, this resource supports the skill of sentence deconstruction. It challenges your students to break the sentence apart into separate pieces, understand how the pieces relate to one another, and visualize each piece together as a whole.
In this resource, there are 40 different sentence targets included. Each sentence is targeted in 4 steps:
- Read the sentence.
- Zoom in on the sentence parts. Imagine what each part means.
- Reflect on the sentence. Answer questions about it.
- Check your comprehension. Choose the correct picture (from a field of 4 real pictures) that shows all of the details and parts from the sentence. You’ll get immediate feedback about if you’re correct/incorrect including reflection questions.
This resource includes digital files (as clickable PDFs) for so you can purchase it and use it immediately with no prep or printing.
I also included an assessment version of the sentences if that format is best for you. This version includes 4 sets of 10 sentences and auto-scores to make data collection and progress monitoring even easier.
Last, the resource now also includes a printable version of the sentences and pictures in case that format works best for you.
Foundational sentence comprehension skills including vocabulary, syntax, working memory and more are all targeted using this one activity.
Note: The pictures and sentences repeat in the activities and assessment file. There are 40 unique sentences targeted and included in this resource.
