How to Be a Mentor in Speech Therapy

  1. Hi Shannon, I agree with you about mentoring. In fact, I think CCC-SLPs should also be shadowing each other. Thats why I started a service to connect us CCC-SLPs with each other for both mentoring and shadowing opportunities. I’d love to have you check out, join, or share our website: http://www.expandyourscope.com. ~ Autumn

Hi Shannon my daughter is a undergrad student in the communication Disorder program at her college. Her goal is to eventually become a SLP. She’s going through a little bit of a tough time in school she’s getting a little discouraged and I shared with her that she should look for a mentor that can help her and just support. Do you know where she can find mentors in this field. She’s attending school in Huntsville Alabama.
    Thanks 😊

Hi Castalia, that’s a great idea! The American Speech-Language Hearing Association has a mentorship program for undergrad and graduate students called S.T.E.P. that might be perfect for your daughter! It looks like they will be accepting mentee enrollment through Feb. 14, 2022 for this year’s program. Otherwise, I would recommend getting involved with NSSLHA, the school association for communication disorder students. It doesn’t look like Huntsville has a chapter, but there are others in Alabama and she might be able to participate from a distance: https://www.nsslha.org/chapters/affiliated-chapters/. Best of luck to her!
