Articulation Carnival App Review
So excited to share my latest app review/giveaway with all of you!! It is really fun and motivating for your artic clients!
Introducing Articulation Carnival by the Virtual Speech Center! From the home screen you can “Start” (pick clients/sounds), just “Play Games”, adjust “Settings”, view “Reports”, watch tutorial videos under “Info” and see “More Apps” from the developer. See some screenshots of each page I just mentioned below:
So once you “Start” and choose the student, you can choose the sounds you want to work on. These will save each time for each student, but it confirms each time you start the game as well.
One important thing (for me) for articulation apps is the quality of pictures. I like high quality, real (not clip art), and salient. I really like the quality of pictures in this app! Below are some examples:
In the pictures above you can also see the general set up of the app! Starting in the upper left corner and moving counterclockwise we have… Finish, which will end your session and take you to the data section. Then, below that you can see the student(s) names who are active in the session. Below that is the sounds that are being targeted (changes when you scroll between students). Then, we have the position you are targeting (initial, medial, final). Last in this column we have if you are targeting the sound at the word, phrase, or sentence level. Each of these customization options can be scrolled through (by swiping) at any time.
On the right side of the screen you can take data (correct, approximated, incorrect), see the current accuracy percentage, change the settings, and record your student producing the word/phrase/sentence.
To go from word to word, you simply swipe the current picture! (this took me a minute to figure out haha)
The app comes with the setting to bring up the games page after 5 words (doesn’t matter if they are correct or incorrect). The games options are below:
All of the games are really fun, easy to play, and motivating! My one recommendation would be for the app to have a timer option! The only game that automatically uses a timer is the basketball one. I would LOVE the ability to choose to add a timer to all of them because they could last forever!
One thing I really like about this app is the data tracking section. I love the graphs they make! Below are some screenshots of the data section! It’s really useful and I love how you can email the data as well.
One feature I really like is the ability to add your own words/picture. Check out how easy it is to do below:
Just select the phoneme, placement, and type the word/add a picture!
Below is an example of what the app looks like when you play with multiple students (love that this is an option). My one concern with this is that you have to manually switch between students! I would like it if there was an option that did it automatically for you every other turn! (same with sounds, etc..)
If you want a quick overview of what I’ve stated above, below are my overall pros and cons:
PROS:
-Extremely motivated
-Well designed, great use of graphics
-Great quality pictures
-Very useful data tracking
-Intuitive and fun to use (lots of swipe technology)
-Good settings/options to customize
-Ability to add your own words/pictures
CONS:
-Have to manually switch between students, phonemes, etc…
-No timers on 3/4 games
-Some text overlapping in the data section
OVERALL:
This app is fantastic! I love that is it just like the other articulation apps I use all of the time, except that it has built in reinforcers that kids will love! The app is intuitive and looks great. Additionally, it takes useful data and provides multiple ways to view the data (including graphs). I would absolutely recommend this app to other SLPs looking for a motivating articulation app for their own students! One important thing to mention is that you can buy all the sounds together (for $36.99) OR buy sounds individually (prices vary) which I think is AMAZING when recommending this app to parents! They definitely don’t want/need every sound!
You can find Articulation Carnival here in the App Store or check it out on Virtual Speech Center’s website here.

Hi Shannon…this looks like a great app…I am an undergraduate student & wanted to purchase an articulation app. I was torn between this one & the Articulation Scenes. Just curious about the fact that there is no mention of this app being designed by an SLP. Do you find it to be accurate? I like the look of this one better than the Smarty Ears app and wanted some feed back as to it’s accuracy. Thank you!
I’ve found them both to be very accurate, although I will say I do use Articulation Scenes more often!
